You need the micro pod 2 to do scan tool testing, bi directional controls, see live data, and other mechanical shop stuff.  The point of the video is that key programming can be done without the micro pod 2.

The j2534 will allow for key programming but you might need the ultra can module add on.

L300 has a tsb for bcm replace and says to not program the bcm unless you call in first and do "VCI".  What GM will tell you is to remove the IPC first and program bcm,  then install ipc.
If you don't follow this tsb you will brick the new bcm... (personal experience)

JBC is the best but the HAKKO 951 is an awesome substitute for the JBC as they are priced really high. My Hakko is ready to solder in 30 seconds no joke.

It just depends on the end user. If your going to be using it several times a day then buy a JBC but if your like me and only use it a few times a month then buy something more practical but none of that cheap ebay crap that has an attractive price. There are Hakkos and there are Wakkos that look like a Hakko but perform like a 25 watt walmart soldering iron. Dont buy any stations from radioshack unless they are a popular Weller station. If you google "soldering station shootout" you will find articles and videos from knowledgeable gurus explaining the pros and cons of each product with usually a top three of the class.
I often replace smd mosfets that are really tough with a small tip so getting an assortment of tip styles is worth while but also have a cost and if your in a tough spot usually several days out.
I also have an Hakko 850 hot air station that seems to work really well and has held up for many years.
