I have the Hakko 888d. got it on amazon for $91. A very basic unit but works fine for me. Mine heats up fast as well.

If he gets the correct chip to replace it with, that should work though right? John at ARLabs sells a variety pack fyi. Saved my bacon when a toyota flash job didn't take. You can get them on ebay too if you know what you are looking for but i figured whatever I get from arlabs will be good quality.
